SOI 7/1 – THE PLACE THEY MADE THE MOVIE HANGOVER II
Soi 7/1 is situated just off Sukhumvit Road and is an excellent place to relax and have a beer without the craziness which is Bangkok, this is probably why 7/1 was chosen as the main production location for the famous hangover 2 movie (The white lion and Tattoo parlour scene).
The street is lined on either side with bars and restaurant and has become famous for some quite specialised bars along the street such as BJ’s and Eden Club. Should you want to know more see the links or visit the websites. The street also has a great selection of English and Australian bars and other nationalities many of which stay open long after other places have closed. The street really has a great vibe but in a nice relaxing atmosphere.
This street is a real hidden gem and should not be missed, but can be very intimidating due the narrowness of the street and the lack of tourists (not a bad thing). This street is very safe and great for a visit, more so the manager are mostly international but on an evening it may be hard to spot them that’s why it’s always a good idea to go with a guide and get the most of street and what it has to offer.
OTHER PLACES WE CAN HELP WITH INFORMATION FROM A LOCALS PERSPECTIVE !!
Soi Cowboy is a popular red-light district in Bangkok. A short (400 meter long) street with some 40 bars, it is similar to Nana Plaza and Patpong and caters mainly to tourists and expatriates. After Patpong this street is probably the next visited place by tourists but can be very difficult for newbie’s to enter into many of the establishments due to the closed doors and curtains which can be very intimidating.
The Soi (Street) was given its name by long time nightlife columnist Bernard Trink, after the late T. G. “Cowboy” Edwards, a retired American airman who opened one of the first bars there in 1977. A tall African-American, Edwards got his nickname because he often wore a cowboy hat. The Soi became famous with the filming of the movie Hangover 2 and Bangkok dangerous.
This is a tourist location but can be overpowering if you are not a seasoned visitor to the Cowboy and it makes good sense to use a guide if it’s your first time, it will make the experience so much more memorable. Tourist police are around but out of sight so customers rarely get into any kind of trouble. The language barrier can be a major issue should problems arise and an experienced guide would certainly be a plus
NANA PLAZA TOUR
Nana Plaza is an entertainment plaza frequented my many foreign tourists of all ages from 20 to 80 looking for the crazy ‘hangover’ movie experience. Nana Plaza is one of the best and most famous red light locations in the world; and it doesn’t disappoint. The Plaza is a must tourist destination should you visit Bangkok but you must be open minded and be prepared to put your thoughts about the world away for the evening and just have some fun.
Nana Plaza is a 3 story complex style plaza filled approximately 100 normal bars, girly bars and Go Go bars.
Nana Plaza is unique in the fact that it offers much more than just girl entertainment.
Tourists can actually enjoy sitting at the many outdoor bars while enjoying reasonably priced food and drink and conversing with the girls and other tourists. You can get some great information and tips on Thailand and beyond from the many locals and tourists which visit.
Although this is a tourist location it can be overpowering if you are not a seasoned visitor to the Plaza and it makes good sense to use a guide if it’s your first time, it will make the experience so much more memorable. Tourist police are around but out of sight so customers rarely get into any kind of trouble. The language barrier can be a major issue should problems arise and an experienced guide would certainly be a plus.
There are several female and lady-boy bars to choose from depending on how much fun you looking to have. If you looking to check out the third gender (lady-boys) this is the place to go. Just be courteous and friendly and you will have a nice time. The plaza has so much to offer tourists for a great night out, so if you’re looking for an untouched attraction then get there while it lasts!
PATPONG TOUR (AVOID IF POSSIBLE)
Patpong gets its name from the family that owns much of the area’s property. Patpong in recent times has lost a great deal of its vibrancy as a go-go bar and sexual services strip, becoming crowded with tourist shoppers who were at best bemused by the nightlife and put a big damper on the strip’s power to excite and amuse. The main real action has now moved to the newer nightlife areas of Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy, which today far outdo Patpong as go-go bar strips.
In recent years, there has been a move away from the traditional sex venues to trendy Hip Hop bars which are very popular with both tourists and local Thais. He lies the problem, unlike Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy local Thai men are allowed into many of these bars which can lead to the usual problem of alcohol fuelled problems and since you don’t know the language you are always at a disadvantage with the security and the police should they turn up.
Several bars still claim to feature (technically illegal) sex shows, with women performing various creative acts such as Ping pong show. 99% of these bars do not and most are run by scam artists and local mafia who lure tourists with offers of low prices and later present a wildly inflated bill along with a threat of physical harm should the bill go unpaid. The Tourist Police are available but to be honest are nothing more than ‘a dog with no teeth’ and no help whatsoever.
Some establishments in Patpong employ kathoeys (or “ladyboys”) either exclusively or as part of a mixed gender staff. Unlike the kathoey bars in Nana Plaza, many of the staff at these Patpong bars are post-operative transsexuals.
